Abstract: | This paper, which is related to the work of T.O. Ranger, 'Revolt in Southern Rhodesia 1896-97' (London, 1967), argues that all analyses since 1896 were wrong: the rising was not 'simultaneous' or 'almost simultaneous' and consequently the need for a 'religious' or 'political' overall organisation falls away. It starts with a re-examination of the background to the rising and a redefinition of the nature of Shona resistance to the economy and rule of the Europeans. Notes, fig., sum. |
