Abstract:Discusses the African response to Christianity as introduced by one of the most important missionary societies operating in Southern Rhodesia today, namely the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society. The article shows that after the suppression of the Ndebele and Shona risings of 1896-1897 their spiritual resistance to Christianity did not collapse, as is sometimes assumed. The ministry overcame this resistance through a combination of preaching, healing and teaching. Notes.
