Abstract:One of the subjects on which the Yoruba have a lot to say is education. The Yoruba word Eko inadequately translated into English as 'education' is very comprehensive in its scope. It covers religion, politics, training in agriculture and handicraft, etiquette, character and many other. The author of the present article gives instances of the meaning of Eko and shows the ideas behind it. Within the past 100 years these ideas seem to have undergone considerable change. Education is now of a completely different character, aiming in theory at fitting men and women into their society, but in practice making them semi-Europeans. References.
