| Abstract: | Having first settled in northeastern Tanzania (c. 1500), the Kamba communities later, in the same century, initiated a swift migration into Ukamba, an area that eventually became their 'homeland' in Kenya, east of the rift highlands. There they experienced a full three centuries of relatively autonomous development. Its important periods are covered in four essays: one on the times of the Kilimanjaro settlements and migrations; another on the years of the central Mbooni enclosure settlement in Ukamba; a third treating the ascendancy of trading within a largely non-trading society; and the final years prior to the colonial intrusion.
