Abstract: | This article describes the role played by females in the Bakongo system of slavery, particularly in the period from the early 18th century to the middle of the 19th century. It is based on the theoretical model developed by K. SACKS, 'Sisters and wives: the past and future of sexual equality' (Westport, Conn., 1979) who divides women's role analytically into two categories, one associated with the status of sister (autonomy, ownership, solidarity and power) and the other with that of wife (subordination, dependence and isolation).
