Abstract: | In the dry months many Diolas from the Lower Casamance, about half of them women, migrate to the Cap Vert region in search of employment. In 1978 the author conducted research in the village of Thionk Essil to trace the historical evolution of female migration, to examine more fully its impact on the rural level, and to gather data on rural income attributable to seasonal migration. It appears that from its inception until now the migration of Diola women has been motivated primarily by economic gain. Any viable proposals to impede it in any way must involve economic profits at least equal to those of present urban migration. Map, notes, tab. |
