Abstract:The Asante emphasized the importance they attached to warfare, as a means of political expansion, in the following ways. They combined military with political offices, and devised a fairly elaborate system of sanctions for the inculcation of desirable martial qualities. They held up their rulers as ideal warriors who were worthy of emulation, and adapted their military organization to the changing military situation. Finally, they sacrificed material welfare to the demands of warfare. Notes.
