Abstract: | The past two years, 1968-69, have seen the publication of a significant handful of economic textbooks, designed for first-year university students in Africa. The lack of suitable textbooks has been only one of many constraints on the teaching of economics at university level in Africa. After looking at a few of the more general difficulties faced by academic economists in Africa, the author reviews some of the relevant books available to African universities at various stages of their development, end reports on some recent constructive discussions of teaching problems, with a final closer examination of three new textbooks: Problems of university teaching in Africa - 'Anglo-Saxon' textbooks in Africa - Is economic theory universal? - New directions in Dar es Salaam - An African conference on economic teaching (Dar es Salaam 1969) - Textbooks for the 1970s?
