Abstract: | In a developing but predominantly peasant economy such as that of West Africa, the effects of migrations on the society and the cultural landscape are generally more obvious in the receiving areas or destinations than in the source regions. But where the volume of out-migration is considerable, structural changes in the source region as well as the feed-back effects of migrations have also brought about marked cultural changes in the areas which export population. This paper considers some of the cultural changes in the areas which export population. This paper considers some of the cultural changes resulting from migratory movements in West Africa with particular reference to the influence of migrations on the diffusion of innovations, changing food habits and the changing character of the pattern of rural occupance.
