Abstract: | Among the four tribes (Iraqv, Gorowa, Burungi, Alawa) in northern Tanzania who have languages and modes of life different from those of the agricultural Bantu and herding Nilotic groups in their neighbourhood, the Iraqw have the largest population, most of them living in the Mbulu area. The Kyoto University Africa Scientific Expedition Team has investigated mainly the tribes of the herding Datoga, agricultural Bantu, and hunting and gathering Hadzapi living in Mangola village in Mbulu District. As a result of these previous investigations, the Iraqw, who preserve the peculiar characteristics of their own mode of life and language in spite of living in the same area with the other tribes mentioned earlier, were chosen as a basis for comparative study of the tribes.
