Abstract: | Policy and programmes in respect of housing modernization in most Third World countries and in Nigeria specifically can be described as grossly inadequate. Houses are built without taking adequate cognizance of the most sensitive elements in the culture. Aside from the physical environment, there are other critical elements such as building materials, the nature of the family system, the spatial housing needs both in physical and functional terms, and living behaviour. The author examines such cultural factors in Third World housing, using the Efiks, in Calabar, southeast Nigeria, as an example. The cultural reasons for the Efiks housing design are the reflections of simple living. The houses provide continued interest and satisfaction to the traditional people who frown on modern glass houses as an environmental mismatch. Ref., sum. |
