Abstract: | According to 1977 figures, Cape Verde has 313,000 inhabitants, who are rather unequally distributed geographically. Almost half the population live on the island of Santiago alone. Here, as on Sao Vicente and Brava, the population density per square kilometer lies between 132 and 165, whereas on Maio it is no more than 15 and on Boa Vista only 6. Can it be said that such variations in population density combined with the unequal pressure on available resources, especially in rural areas, tend to create inequalities between the islands, particularly with regard to nutrition and health? The answer would seem to be yes, at least in certain fields. The outlook for children varies according to such factors as age group, season of the year and the location in which they live. Sections: inequalities before death - disparities in nutritional situation - differences in levels of agricultural resources and rural extension systems - unequal access to preventive and curative medical care - comparing the disparities.
