Abstract:This article is about the marital sexual relationships and birth spacing among two Yoruba sub-groups, the Ekiti and Ikale. It is argued that the similarity in birth spacing among the two groups, derived from contrasting attitudes to post-partum abstinence, is evidence of explicit decision on the timing of the next child. Chapters: 1) The Ekiti and Ikale of Yorubaland (the Ekiti - the Ikale). 2) Differences in fertility, family formation and marital sexual relationships (post-partum sexual attitudes - breast-feeding duration - who terminates breast-feeding? - reasons for terminating breastfeeding - physical growth and the timing of the next child - participation of kin and in-laws in the next-child decision). 3) Prospects and implications.
