Abstract: | This paper concerns the Yoruba of Nigeria, who left that country to go to Ghana in response to economic pressures created by the colonial economy. It describes their economic position from the turn of the century to 1969-1970 when most of them were forced to leave Ghana in the wake of the government's Alien Compliance Order which called for the expulsion of all aliens who did not posess valid residence permits. This Order, also known as the Aliens Deportation Order, resulted in the exodus of hundreds of thousands of Africans from Ghana. The paper describes the specific roles which Yoruba migrants played in Ghanaian commerce during 1900 and 1970, deals with the question as to whether or not they 'dominated' market trade in Ghana (Yoruba traders vis-a-vis Ghanaians, Europeans and Levantines), and discusses the implications of the data on Yoruba migrants in Ghana for the development of national policies towards Africans in foreign countries.
