Abstract: | In Africa the use of science for selfreliant development is only hesitantly attempted in educational curricula. As a result, there is a continuing shortage of science staff and teachers of technical disciplines, while the continent continues to depend on imported technologies which are sometimes not properly understood. A series of problems thus arise in the teaching of science and technology in Africa. These problems include the elaboration of coherent policies at the national level, the training of adequate numbers of technological scientists and the development of a system of science education based on an appropriate methodology for the teaching of science and technology, and tailored to the needs of national development. It is on the solution of these problems that progress toward improved understanding of science and its use for the improvement of communal living standards will depend. Notes. |
