Abstract: | This article, which grew out of personal experiences at making literature from one village understood outside the language area, examines the problems of a teacher or a translator encounter when he attempts to create a reasonable level of understanding of a literature in the mind of one who grew up in a different culture. It also examines the example of poetic songs with reference to the problems of relating one culture's literature to another. These songs are from a collection of songs made in a Yoruba village called Ufe (spelt Iffe by the colonial administrators, which spelling is still retained in all official documents). This village is in Ijumu Local Government area of Kwara State. |
