Abstract:	In 1964, the West African Examinations Council introduced a new syllabus in School Certificate history that was considered to be a revolutionary one because it laid a great emphasis on African history. About the same time, some innovations were made in a number of other subjects offered for the West Africa School Certificate Examination. These innovations included the introduction of objective tests in English, French and Geography. Both teachers and pupils have reacted in various ways to this innovation. At the moment, history is being examined only subjectively at School Certificate level. This study is designed to find out the possible reactions of fifth-form history teachers and their students to the introduction of objective tests in School Certificate history. The results of the questionnaires show that objective testing would be accorded a warm reception by fifth-form history teachers, but that it would be unpopular with their students. Ref., tables.
