Abstract:The vast savannah region stretching from Senegal to Chad is as vulnerable as ever to one single year of inadequate rains, and two successive ones, in 1982 and 1983, have proved disastrous. The author looks at the impact of the drought, the problems of trading and storage both of locally grown food crops and of famine relief supplies, the social consequences of drought, and the success of irrigation projects and schemes to combat erosion.
