Abstract:Although there are considerable differences in levels of income within rural and within urban areas, the urban/rural problem has become a major issue in the development strategies of all the countries of Southern and East Africa. The geographic fact that in all these countries the major part of the population is still overwhelmingly found in rural areas is of paramount significance to policy makers since urban/rural inequalities in income and economic opportunity pose a potential for conflict. The author reviews the situation in: South Africa, Rhodesia, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique. He advocates a more equitable distribution of wealth among people, and among regions. Tab., map, photo.
