Abstract: | During a conference held in Pretoria from 17-20 September 1979 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Human Sciences Research Council, four papers were read on, inter alia, the educational development of the different population groups in the Republic of South Africa until the, year 1978. The present article highlights certain salient facts which came to the fore in the papers in question. Attention is focussed on certain contact areas in the educational development and educational status quo of the different population groups; some common problem areas in education; some points of criticism which are incessantly levelled at the South African educational system; and economic, practical and demographic realities that have a bearing on educational development in the Republic of South Africa.
