Abstract: | Examines the problems of development in Africa. 'Development' encompasses here 'social growth' (not only development of new social institutions, cultural forms, technological civilization, but also of social attitudes, skills, 'mental sets'). After an analysis of the 'sociocultural dividends' which have accrued to Zambia because of the activities of the mines the same is done with regard to Bookers (Zambia) Ltd. Finally the role of the religious organizations - the Christian Churches - in development is examined. Conclusion: Non-governmental agencies - private businesses, commercial firms, churches, other service organizations - have not only been dynamos of inspiration to the African, but also have made very important contributions to the whole field of development.
