Abstract:Analysis of the gradual developments that have taken place in a small-scale agricultural pump scheme in the Northern Province of the Sudan. In particular an illustration is given how members of Nuri village community, situated in the Sha'iqiya region, with minimal government intervention, have adapted to change, benefitted from the shift from a subsistence to a cash economy, realized the importance of diversification of cash crop production, invested revenues connected with the agricultural sector and other spheres, and continued to think of future development. Nuri has been, at the beginning of this century, chosen for the introduction of mechanical irrigation. This initial change has had considerable repercussions on the1 growth and development of the community. The changing economic development is examined both to show external government intervention and to draw attention to the presence of local initiative in this developing community. Notes.
