Abstract: | Ribat al-Riyadah, the Mosque College at Lamu, is a traditional Muslim school, which teaches no modern subjects whatever, but its influence spreads no only the length of Kenya coast but also into Tanganyika South of Dar es Salaam. Its annual celebration of the Prophet's birthday, the Maulidi attracts visitors from far and wide. Founder of This Sunni Mosque College, and inaugurator of its maulidi celebration, was Habib Salih, who was born at Anjouan (Johanna) on the Comoro Islands as a son of an Arab father and a Comorian mother. He arrived at Lamu at 1885. As well as teaching, he introduced a kind of religious celebration which was immediately attractive to both Hadrami Arabs and Swahilis. |
