Abstract:The first phase of the Sudan's large-scale irrigation scheme at Khasm el Girba was inaugurated in 1964. The scheme is in many ways unique: 1) it is the first scheme to use the highly-seasonal flow of the Atbara tributary for gravity irrigation and hydro-electric power; 2) part of the scheme has been devoted to the first major re-settlement carried out in the Sudan, in an area hitherto used only by migrant graziers; 3) 24-hour watering was to have been used throughout the scheme, an innovation in the Sudan's gravity irrigation works on this scale; 4) the scheme contains the Sudan's second area of sugar production, differing from the first in the important respect that direct labour is to be used. In these and other respects the scheme has provided a new experience in development in the Sudan. This paper examines and evaluates the project in some detail from an economic viewpoint.
