Abstract: | Nigeria has, over the past decade, developed a number of institutions to provide training in technical agriculture. These institutions fall into three main categories: 1. university-level education and training for professional personnel to undertake research, 2. intermediate-level training to provide the large number of technical officers required in all aspects of agriculture, including the extension services, and 3. the vocational type of training for young people. This paper examines the present status of staff training in the Nigerian extension service and ascertains the extent to which it has aided or retarded agricultural progress. The conclusion of the author is that a more practical problem-oriented approach should be taken in the training: how to combat low productivity and how to induce the farmer to adopt improved farming practices.
