Abstract: | This essay, which has the objective of outlining suitable conditions for unipartyism, should be viewed as a response to a phenomenon which has become widespread in Africa, and threatens to remain so for the foreseeable future. Its purpose is: to seek alternatives within which the best could be obtained from the prevailing order. Before embarking on this task, the author pays particular attention to some general questions: Under what circumstances can a uniparty system enhance the prospects of order and political stability? What factors are responsible for the multiplicity of one-party governments in Africa? To what extent have the views of single party proponents been vindicated by political practice? In the conclusion the author indicates the conditions under which orderly government could evolve in a one-party system. Notes, French summary. |
