Abstract: | Development of the Sudanese economy was to a large extent conceived as being dependent on two massive projects, the development of oil resources and the completion of the Jonglei Canal. Both these projects, have been interrupted by the current instability in the country. The two letters published here throw some light on the motivations of those whose actions have disrupted these projects. Both are dated in late 1983 and signed by Joseph Oduho, chairman of the political and foreign affairs committee of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. One is addressed to Chevron Oil, the other to the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Kenya (since Egypt, together with Northern areas of the Sudan, was intended to benefit from the Jonglei Canal scheme). |
