Abstract: | It is one of the ironies of the Nigerian civil war that both sides regard relief entirely from a political rather than a humanitarian point of view. The food crisis developed as a Federal blockade of air, sea and land routes into the Eastern Region cut off the supply of cattle from the north and dried fish from Scandinavia. The actions of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Joint Church Aid (a consortium of 33 Catholic, Protestant and Jewish relief organizations from 21 countries) are described in the article. Finally the motives of the agencies and donors involved in the relief effort are exposed. |
