Abstract:This article looks at the real challenges which Islam holds for the Christian church in South Africa. First it presents a history of Islam in South Africa. Then it deals with the influence of Ayatollah Khomeini and the events which took place in Iran during the past number of years on South African Muslims: a rapid growth of Islam within the Black community in South Africa in general and in Soweto after 1976 in particular. Notes, tab. Reprint of the 1984 article in New faces of Africa.
