Abstract:This paper on the material base of Tlhaping society (Tswana, South Africa) describes the changes undergone during the periods of pre-contact and contact, c. 1795-1806 and 1806-1817, and reiterates some well-established notions: that African producers made choices to increase their individual utility, that there exists a dynamic connection between production and exchange, and that contact involved the contradictions of absorption and resistance. Contents: the Tlhaping social formation, c. 1795-1806 - the penetration of merchant capital, 1806-1817. Notes.
