Abstract: | Mr. L.W. Wawomola published the history of the custom of circumcision (imbalu) among the Bamasaba, written in Lumasaba, in April 1969. This was translated into English by R. Kiondo: Introduction - What is the meaning of the word imbalu? - The beginnings of imbalu in Bugisu - Procedures and rules governing imbalu - The art of circumcising - Circumcising women. On pages 58-74 Margaret Macpherson presents a list of circumcision year names (Kamengilo) in Masaba, together with their meanings, based on records of the names of circumcision years collected from as far back as 1801. |
