Abstract: | Part one of this study outlines the origins of the Bamasaba who are most widely known as the Bagisu. The origins of circumcision among the Bamasaba are intimately linked with the origins of the people themselves. The second part seeks to shed some light on the historical origins of circumcision among the Bamasaba and, additionally, to indicate the significance of the institution as seen by the people themselves. Because circumcision - imablu or ipalu - plays a crucial role in the life of the people, it is essential to understand its origins and functions. Also the study tries to advance evidence concerning the origins of circumcision among the Bamasaba and local traditions about the Bamasaba genesis, in the context of theories of their Bantu origin.
