Abstract:The literature of the Gbaya, developed over a period of centuries and transmitted orally from generation to generation, represents the experience and wisdom of the Ancients. The narrator of Gbaya tale, like an actor, performs and interprets his piece before his audience which participates in the performance, while by up-dating the setting and introducing details from contemporary life the narrator makes his story alive and meaningful for his listeners. The tô, or folktale, represents the most extensive form of Gbaya literature. Closely related to the tô is the lizang, the parable. Gima, songs, also form part of Gbaya literature. The sumgba, or riddle, stands in a class by itself. The tales and riddles, presented here, were recorded on tape in Gbaya homes. To the vernacular texts English translations are added: 'The brother's quest'; 'Wantô and the Great Hunt'. Notes.
