Abstract: | Poll-tax agitation, a fairly common phenomenon in Africa, has on most occasions involved little more than vocalized protest. Yet the agitations by the Isaq Somali in Kenya was a highly unusual movement: first the Isaq were campaigning to pay higher taxation; secondly, in order to secure their aims they attempted to mobilize the whole Isaq diaspora, so that Somali in Uganda, Tanganyika, British Somaliland and Britain were all involved. The Isaq were strongly convinced that their status was superior to that of other East Africans and being placed in the last category for paying poll-tax this sparked off the agitation. Sections of the study: The status of the Isaq in Kenya, 1919-36 - The support for the Kenya Isaq in British Somaliland - Somali agitation in Britain - The Isaq campaign in Kenya - The failure of the poll tax movement - Conclusion.
