Abstract:The contribution of the informal economy to South Africa's economic development has been recognized and local economic development has been accepted as an important goal of local government policy. The Self Employed Women's Union has contracted researchers at the Centre for Social and Development Studies (CSDS) of the University of Natal, Durban, to undertake the South African pilot study of an international programme of action research WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising), which is concerned with the effects of globalization on the economic position of women. This paper draws from the first part of the research which synthesizes results from surveys of the informal sector and interviews and focus group discussions with women street traders in the Durban metropolitan area, concentrating on conditions of life and work. Attention is given to the range of goods sold, gender differences, entry and access to the informal sector, over-trading in the survivalist sector, working hours, accommodation, attending to household responsibilities, the impact of crime, the role of local governance and regulation, and the formation of interest group associations to assist women street traders in the informal economy.
