Abstract:At the end of 1970 and in early 1971, Tanzanians were shocked by the mass circumcision and teeth extraction which took place in Singida area. The aim of this article is to look into the rationale behind the Nyaturu decision to do such things; the hypothesis is that they circumcised and extracted the teeth of the children to prevent what was believed to be a national calamity. Sections: Introduction - Contradiction to the Nyaturu cultural heritage - Why did such activities persist? The end result - Conclusion. Notes; tables; map of the Singida district.
