Abstract:The Weppa-wano inhabit the north-eastern portion of Etsakor district in the Benin province of Midwestern Nigeria. The area is the habitat of some 20,425 people, most of them sedentary agriculturalists engaged in subsistence farming with which this study is concerned. Sketched is their history and social organisation with detailed reference to the types of marriages found in the community, while the analysis is concluded with an examination of the variables which govern the choice between the types.
