Abstract: | Most of the paediatric problems in Nigeria have been associated with certain child-rearing practices, a fact which also suggests that some of the problems can be prevented. The authors therefore decided to find out from Yoruba mothers their knowledge and beliefs about the causes of some of the medical problems affecting their children and how they feel these conditions can be prevented. The study, which was carried out in Ile-Ife, focused mainly on measles and diarrhoea (gastroneteritis) because these have come up prominently among the major causes of death and children's admissions in Nigeria.
