Abstract: | In the social milieu of Sidi 'Ameur, situated in the Sahel of Tunisia, where men use the bahaviour of women to express their material power, status, and manliness, all positive attributes of honour are associated with men and all aspects that might negate honour are associated with women, hence all the prohibitions and restrictions on women's behaviour. A glimpse of peace and harmony is achieved if there is baraka (divine increase and growth, the blessing of God), to enable men to afford to have honour. The material manifestations of baraka are wealth, sons, success, and as a corollary of them, honour. Women are completely dependent for their moral and material welfare on men, and honour is then meshed with the agnatic system and the material success of their agnates. Refs. |
