Abstract:There has been growing concern in Tanzania about the 'bad behaviour' of youth and especially young girls (primary and secondary school pregnancies, induced abortions a.o.). The breakdown of the family and immoral and lewd behaviour of adults is sometimes given as explanation, which itself is explained by the destruction of 'lineage' or 'tribal' relations of the past. This paper concretely examines specific issues of sexuality and fertility among female youth in Tanzania and develops an explanatory framework within which to understand state concern about female sexuality and fertility. - Ref., tab.
