Abstract: | The establishment of the South African Institute of Race Relations in 1929 marked an important new phase of liberal politics in South Africa. In the latter part of the 1950s the Institute served as a key focus for liberal political debate and the germination of a notion that at a later date would cone to be called political pluralism and which would form a pillar in the Institute view of what: denoted the area of 'race relations'. This article exposes which political forces, in Britain and South Africa, contributed to the development of the Institute. Sections: Introductory - The birth of the Institute - The development of an Institute view - The longer term implications. Notes. |
