Abstract:This article deals with the question 'What has been the influence of Islam on national movements (= movements seeking to modify or transform the colonial situation) in West Africa, and on political institutions and ideas in modern West African States?' The region of West Africa with which the author is primarily concerned is the bilàd al-súdán from Senegal to Chad. The purpose of the author is to explore the connexion between the pre-colonial history of the region (in the light of the work of Urvoy, Rouch, Mauny, M.G. Smith, Charles Smith, Hiskett, Bivar, Fage, Hampaté Ba, Boahen a.o.) and its modern political movements and institutions.
