Abstract:The seventeenth century would seem to have been a period of considerable importance for the growth and spread of organised brotherhoods throughout the Sahara and the Sudan. It is slowly becoming clear that there were a series of interconnecting networks linked one with another by wandering scholars. The present account is a contribution to the study of these networks. The wandering scholar was a certain Shaykh Ahmad al-Yamani, who was born in Halfaya in 1630. His journeyings linked the world of the Nile Valley with communities in the Chad Basin, the central Sudan and Morocco. Notes, sum. in French.
