Abstract:The primary strategy for industrial development in Nigeria during the decade of the 1960s was that of import substitution, and the main instrument for implementing it was a range of incentive devices which accorded protection to domestic industries against foreign competition. The aim of this paper is to examine the experience of Nigeria on the issue of tariffs and their probable impact on domestic price level and industrialization. Sections: Nigeria's protection matrix - The basic theory of tariffs - Tariff policy-making in Nigeria - Tariffs and domestic prices - Tariffs and industrialization - Summary and concluding comments. Ref., notes, tables, figures, appendices.
