Abstract:This paper submits additional comments and considerations to an article on effective tariff protection in South Africa - M, Holden and P. Holden, An Intertemporal Calculation of effective Rates of Protection for South Africa (S. Afr. Jl. of Econ., 43(1975), p. 370-379) - and to the comment on it - H. Za-renda. Effective Rates of Protection: A Comment (S. Afr. Jl. of Econ., 43(1975), p. 380-381). This paper also presents an alternative estimate of effective tariff protection in South Africa. The assumptions of infinitely elastic freign supply of imports and demand for domestic exports and of neutral monetary adjustments are retained through-out while the discussion is also limited to a partial equilibrium analysis. Section 1. is concerned with definitional problems and section 2. with the statistical calculations of Holden and Holden. The alternative estimate of effective tariff protection is presented in section 3. Notes, appendix.
