| Abstract: | This paper summarizes detailed customs house records from Luanda, the major seaport of Portugal's colony of Angola, at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. Luanda's imports in the years from 1785 to 1823 reflect both African consumers' demands for textiles and the limited capabilities of Portugal and her empire at the end of the 18th century relative to Britain's modernizing industrial economy. Although most of Luanda's imports seemed destined for African mass consumption in the interior, a significant proportion stayed with European buyers in the town. App. (glossary), notes, ref. |
