Abstract:London University was for many years the only institution which provided residents in Nigeria with the opportunity of obtaining a university degree before the foundation of a local university and without leaving the shores of the country. This paper attempts to discuss the role of the London University and other agencies responsible for the promotion of the London University examinations in Nigeria between 1887, when the examinations were first introduced to Nigeria, and 1951 when an ordinance was passed by the government of Nigeria to establish the West African Examinations Council which took over the work of the Colonial Office and the Department of Education in the promotion and supervision of London University examinations in Nigeria.
