Abstract: | The purpose of this investigation is to discuss mainly the sociological, and partly the historical, bases of names and titles among the Yoruba of Western Nigeria. The authors attempt to demonstrate that a meaningful sociological analysis of Yoruba personal names and traditional titles could be conceptualized as related to their ideas of the universe. The analysis calls for a conceptual framework of Yoruba cosmological ideas as recorded in creation myths, conquest myths and historical accounts in their relationships to the status system among the Yoruba. First the authors discuss a conceptual structure of the Yoruba view of the universe. Second they discuss personal and family names among the Yoruba. Third they discuss titles in the Yoruba traditional society. Last they summarize the important aspects of the investigation and then suggest some areas of further research. References. |
