Abstract: | In a country like South Africa the complexity of modern industrial societies is increased by the fact that there are population groups at different levels of cultural development, and here especially the need for accurate knowledge becomes imperative. The fact that the South African Government thought it advisable to create the Human Sciences Research Council is an indication of the growing recognition that the human sciences can make a contribution in respect of national policy decisions. South Africa experiences certain unique problem of human relationships which necessarily occupy much of the attention of the policy makers. This paper deals with the contribution of the human sciences to national policy in respect of the four functional problems (adaptation; goal attainment; integration; pattern-maintenance and tension-management) that every social system has to meet and communication. This is done primarily in terms of the research findings of the various institutes of the Human Sciences Research Council. |
