Abstract:Worldview had but a brief vogue in British anthropology and has suffered a steady decline of interest. Mary DOUGLAS ('Natural Symbols', London, 1970) may be credited with breathing some life into these dying embers but, in any case, her major preoccupation is with fitting cosmologies to social forms. Nevertheless, the construction of worldview has received some attention from scholars in the British tradition and the purpose of this article is to ponder the adequacy of their approach in the context of modern Africa, with emphasis on South Africa, and to suggest the outline of an alternative approach.
